Cleveland's Pride celebration is produced and sponsored by Cleveland Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Pride, Inc., an independent non-profit organization. Pride Inc. exists to educate both the les-bi-gay communities and the larger general community of Northeast Ohio about the presence and diversity of the lesbian, gay and bisexual communities.

The annual Pride Festival is an opportunity for all communities to come together to celebrate their lives in an open and visible environment. The first Cleveland Pride Festival was held in 1989. The festival has grown and expanded its offerings each year since, moving in 1993 from its traditional venue on a side street in Ohio City to the center of downtown in Cleveland's Public Square.

Pride Inc. is governed by an elected board. Each board member is elected by the membership of the Pride Committee and holds office for a two-year term. Board members are responsible for the administration and financial affairs of the corporation, as well as providing general direction and developmental assistance to the organization. The board is committed to gender equity among office holders and board members.

For the 1994 year the Pride Inc. board consists of Nancy Logan, Jay Ruffner, Scott Hare and Ray Newborn-Hilyard.

Nancy Logan, current interim board president, has been a Pride Inc. board member for three years and has been involved with Pride since coming to Cleveland five years ago. She is a Pride Inc. past president and has also served as vice president. Logan is currently Senior EDP Auditor for May Department Stores Company, parent company of Kaufman's Department Stores. Her previous job experience has been with National City Bank, Sherwin Williams, and LTV Steel Corp. A native Floridian (St. Petersburg), Logan attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. She lived in Louisville, Kentucky before making Cleveland her home. As an active member of the community and advocate for lesbian, gay and bisexual rights, Logan has appeared on local television and was quoted in a November 1992 issue of Newsweek magazine in support of gay issues. Logan and her partner will celebrate their 5th anniversary at Pride.

Jay Ruffner is serving his second term as treasurer of the Pride board. Ruffner has been involved with Cleveland Pride for the past four years, and also serves as advisor for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Alliance at Case Western Reserve University.

Scott C. Hare is a 1986 graduate of CWRU, with a BS in Business Management. His Information Systems minor sparked an interest in computers and eventually led to his career path in programming at an eastside auto insurance company for the past five years. Hare and his spouse, Patrick McCabe, reside in the Coventry Village neighborhood of Cleveland Heights, along with their Maine Coon cat, named Weet. Hare has been an active volunteer in the gay and lesbian community, helping out with various events and organizations such as: the Chronicle, Dancin' in the Streets, the Center, Pride logistics committee co-chair, and the March on Washington committee.

U. Ray Newborn-Hilyard has been a volunteer for the Lesbian-Gay-BisexualTransgender Pride March and Festival for the past four years. During that time, he has coordinated and performed in drag and leather shows to raise funds for Pride. He, along with his spouse Tim, served as cochair for the Pride March Committee. This is the first year Newborn-Hilyard has served on the Pride Board. He feels that volunteering is an excellent way to show pride in himself as a gay man and the admiration he has for our community. He is serving the community to the best of his ability by helping to make this year's Pride March and Festival the best yet. To be assured of that, Newborn-Hilyard hopes to see each of you at Pride '94. If you would like to help with Pride, look him up.

The Cleveland Pride Committee encourages all interested and energetic people to join the committee to help plan for next year's event. There are many tasks that need to be done to make Pride a reality each year. The committee needs people with ideas and eager spirit. Interested parties are also encouraged to seek nomination to the Pride board. The elections process occurs each Fall. If you have any questions about the Pride Committee or Board, please call the Pride Hotline at 595-8788.
